Active Directory Requirements

The process uses groups within Active Directory to describe the mailbox size limits and the recipients of these limits. Using Active Directory was selected above text files or a database as it solves the problems of high availability, simple management and replication; and the generally static nature of the structure means the overhead on Active Directory created by these groups is negligible. The location of these groups in Active Directory is irrelevant as the query used to gather them is based on their name rather than their location, however it would be beneficial to locate them all within a single Organisational Unit to simplify delegation of management to helpdesk staff.

Figure 2: Example Organisational Unit Structure

The group name after the identifying string (the text to the right of Exchange Mailbox Size Limit ) is not used by the process but should be set to a value that represents the group limits for easy identification. The groups notes field is used to hold three keywords that specify the mailbox limits. These are "Issue Warning", "Prohibit Send", "Prohibit Send and Receive" which correlate to the User object attributes of mDBStorageQuota, mDBOverQuotaLimit, mDBOverHardQuotaLimit. The limits in the notes field are expressed in Megabytes (Mb).
